Security on hold

The issue of security is still central in contemporary societies, but is addressed with ineffective approaches

The feeling of insecurity comes back in waves in contemporary societies, the unexpected scares us, frightens us and leads us to ask for more control in order not to renounce our freedoms.

The control and the safety

Control is the leader of the scene (also plastically: the mask, the green pass, the cameras, the men in uniform). Politics promises disorderly security and that is what everyone demands and then security becomes a value, zero risk announces someone, as if that were enough to eliminate the unexpected, which are life.

Cities repopulate with new fears, child violence, disordered in the dark streets of big cities, spontaneous, lazy violence; and the answers? More uniforms, more cameras.

New attacks

Society lives new forms of attacks: on the net, with social media, viruses, and answers? Confused, uncertain, resigned war games. The war in Ukraine and our reactions at first incredulous, then gradually stunned become terror, fear takes over and the search for reasons comes through the considerations of dozens of experts, military, civil, academic, all looking elsewhere, somewhere the reasons.

After the virologists and the tuttologists, here are the guerrologists, but once again everything appears improvised, impromptu, devoid of vision, planning, and safety back to being control not strategy. An attitude? A structural incapacity of our own?

A wrong approach to security

When the economy is without borders, the planet is digitized, mobility in the world has been reduced to the space of a day, you arrive and you start in 24 hours from the farthest place, the issue of security is still addressed with visions of borders, of territorial limits, of responsibilities in metropolitan areas entrusted to improvised experts, small commanders of small armies in uniform moved senselessly in urban mobility plans, mayors sheriffs or strategists.

Safety is dealt with in the same way as bike paths, scooters and bike sharing.

The technology is only evaluated in number of apparatuses and costs but not of effectiveness, of impacts; everything serves. After the event no strategic evaluation, no analysis of the phenomena, no verification of the adequacy of the countermeasures. The answers remain unexpected, insufficient, partial, buffer the last emergency to mitigate the perception of insecurity, just to reassure.
